3 Ways to Relax in NYC This Week
Laugh for a Cause (TONIGHT): Head to Comix tonight and enjoy a great lineup of comedians (The Daily Show‘s John Oliver and Aasif Mandvi, to name two) – then enjoy it even more, knowing that your ticket proceeds will go to Pakistan to help with flood relief efforts. (NOTE: The show is for some reason titled “Stand Up for Religious Freedom.” Maybe the comedy will all be religion-themed? …but proceeds go to flood relief? I don’t get it. But it’s still a great lineup and helping with flood relief is a great cause.) Details here.
Don’t Believe Anything You Think (Tuesday): Join Tuesday night’s Dharma Gathering at the Shambhala Meditation Center for a talk that’s provocatively titled, “Don’t Believe Anything You Think.” You’ll also have the opportunity to meditate in a group setting, which can be very powerful spiritually. (If you’re new to meditation, instructors will be on hand to help you out.) Details here.
Take a Hike: Head to one of the city’s parks (Central, Prospect, Riverside… take your pick) and go for a walk. The “head to a park” part of this equation is essential if you want to maximize the health benefits of your outing – better to breathe in fresh-squeezed oxygen from all those trees than the pollution of cars and buses; so says Randal Williams, the head of Kripalu’s yoga teacher training program. Listen to Williams describing the benefits of nature walks here.
